Its 2010 and this new year of ours has inspired a number of obsessions. It may have started over the holidays while being snowed in with my family in South Dakota. The “worst storm in 40 years” was preceded by an almost other-worldly, icy fog, casting the most delicate spell over the whole of Gregory County.
Photographs inspired words, words inspired music, music inspired cooking and it to this rambling. It seems that we all seek inspiration. For me, this spark is in large part which makes for a happy life. The artful, the silly, the colorful, the quirky. Its like falling love. All can evoke the sensation that anything is possible and that we all have the power to create something lovely.
It's the lovely that has thrust me into the kitchen. While my appetite and heart for this room has never been lacking, I seem to have fallen head over heels with my own palate and the preparation of whole, real food. Today I spent the afternoon loving up some slow cooked pork, a savory, zucchini tart and a mad-packed asparagus salad with broccoli and pignolis.
It’s not only the preparation that I was jonsing for. It was the gathering of ingredients that had me going. Learning of where the pork had come from and about the lives of the farmers who tickled each screwy little tail got me out of bed at an hour which they call “the crack” this morning.
In addition to the tenderly grown ingredients, I’m loving the new-found affair I have with my appliances, utensil drawer and age-old techniques. Bring me the Thai, granite mortar and pestle!
So yes, I am inspired. Today it’s a dish I enjoyed in Jackson Hole, tomorrow it will likely be my friend Stephanie’s hand-made puppets or my girl Karine’s colorful, stretched canvases. I’m ear-to-ear, looking forward to the lovely and to sharing it with you.
To a happy life in a happy year.
